What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is one of the newest image formats, based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Released in 2019, AVIF delivers exceptional compression efficiency — often 50% smaller than JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP at the same visual quality. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (High Dynamic Range), wide color gamuts, transparency, and even animation. However, AVIF support is still limited: while Chrome and Firefox support it, Safari added support only in version 16.4, and many image editors, operating systems, and applications cannot open AVIF files.
AVIF vs JPG — What's the difference?
AVIF dramatically outperforms JPG in compression efficiency, achieving similar visual quality at roughly half the file size. AVIF supports modern features like HDR, 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, and transparency — none of which JPG offers. However, AVIF encoding is significantly slower than JPG, and its limited software support makes it impractical for sharing. JPG, despite being a 1992 standard, remains universally supported across every device, browser, and application. For maximum compatibility and reliable image sharing, JPG is still the safest format.
When should you convert AVIF to JPG?
Convert AVIF to JPG when you need to open, share, or upload images in a format that works everywhere. AVIF files downloaded from modern websites or exported from newer tools often cannot be opened in older image viewers, email clients, or social media uploaders. Converting to JPG guarantees the image can be viewed on any device. Keep in mind that HDR and wide-gamut color data will be tone-mapped to standard sRGB, and any transparency will be replaced with a white background.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this converter really free?
Yes, completely free with no limits on file count or file size (up to 100 MB per file).
Are my files safe?
Files are processed on secure servers and automatically deleted after 15 minutes.
Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
We use 85% JPEG quality, which preserves excellent visual fidelity. Since AVIF often uses very aggressive compression, the JPG output may actually be larger in file size but will be compatible everywhere.
What happens to HDR content in AVIF?
HDR (High Dynamic Range) and wide color gamut data in AVIF files are tone-mapped to standard 8-bit sRGB color space during conversion, since JPG does not support HDR.
Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF is a very new format. Older versions of Windows, macOS, and many image editors do not support it natively. Converting to JPG solves this compatibility problem instantly.
