What is a CR3 file?

CR3 (Canon Raw Version 3) is Canon's latest proprietary RAW image format, introduced with the Canon EOS M50 in 2018. It replaces the older CR2 format and is based on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF/HEIF container) rather than TIFF. CR3 files contain 14-bit RAW sensor data with improved compression efficiency, resulting in smaller file sizes than CR2 while preserving the same image quality. CR3 is used by all modern Canon mirrorless cameras including the EOS R, R3, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50, and R100 series.

CR3 vs JPG — What's the difference?

CR3 files store unprocessed 14-bit sensor data with full dynamic range, while JPG uses lossy 8-bit compression. CR3 preserves highlight and shadow details that JPG permanently discards, giving photographers complete flexibility in post-processing. However, CR3 files are 20-45 MB each and cannot be viewed directly in web browsers or most image viewers. JPG is universally supported and ideal for sharing, uploading, and printing.

When should you convert CR3 to JPG?

Convert CR3 to JPG when you need to share photos via email, social media, or messaging apps. Most platforms do not accept RAW files. JPG is also required for web publishing, online portfolios, client galleries, and most printing services. If you have finished editing your RAW files and need a shareable output format, JPG provides excellent visual quality at a fraction of the file size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this converter really free?

Yes, completely free with no limits on file count or file size (up to 100MB per file).

Are my files safe?

Files are processed on secure servers in Germany and automatically deleted after 15 minutes. We do not store, analyze, or share your files.

Will I lose quality converting CR3 to JPG?

CR3 contains more data than JPG can represent (14-bit vs 8-bit), so some dynamic range is reduced. Our converter produces high-quality JPGs at 85% quality that look excellent for sharing, printing, and web use.

Which Canon cameras use CR3?

All modern Canon mirrorless cameras use CR3, including the EOS R, R3, R5, R5 II, R6, R6 II, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100, and the EOS M50. Older Canon DSLRs use the CR2 format instead.

What is the difference between CR2 and CR3?

CR3 is Canon's newer RAW format based on the HEIF container, while CR2 uses a TIFF container. CR3 offers better compression (smaller files), faster read/write speeds, and supports features like Canon's C-RAW (compressed RAW). Image quality is equivalent between the two formats.
