What is an XLS file?

XLS is Microsoft Excel's legacy binary file format, used as the default spreadsheet format from Excel 97 through Excel 2003. XLS files use the BIFF (Binary Interchange File Format) to store worksheet data, formulas, charts, and formatting. Despite being replaced by XLSX in 2007, XLS remains widely encountered in corporate archives, government databases, accounting systems, and legacy enterprise software. XLS files have a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet, and a file size limit of approximately 32 MB.

XLS vs JPG — What's the difference?

XLS is an editable binary spreadsheet format with formulas, macros, and structured data. JPG is a compressed raster image with no editable content. Converting XLS to JPG produces a pixel-perfect snapshot of each sheet, preserving cell borders, number formatting, chart graphics, and conditional formatting exactly as rendered. The resulting image is universally viewable but cannot be edited or used for calculations.

When should you convert XLS to JPG?

Convert XLS to JPG when you need to share legacy spreadsheet data as non-editable images. This is particularly useful for archiving old financial records, sharing historical reports with stakeholders who do not have Excel, embedding spreadsheet snapshots in documents or presentations, or preserving the visual layout of legacy files that may not render correctly in modern software.

Yes, completely free with no limits on file count or file size (up to 100MB per file).

Are my files safe?

Files are processed on secure servers and automatically deleted after 15 minutes.

What is the difference between XLS and XLSX?

XLS is the older binary format used by Excel 97-2003 with a 65,536 row limit. XLSX is the modern XML-based format introduced with Excel 2007, supporting over 1 million rows. Our converter handles both — see also our XLSX to JPG and Excel to JPG converters.

Will formulas be visible in the output?

The converter renders cell values as displayed in Excel, not the underlying formulas. The JPG output shows exactly what you would see when viewing or printing the spreadsheet.

Can I convert password-protected XLS files?

Password-protected files cannot be converted. Please remove the password protection in Excel before uploading.
