What is an XLSX file?
XLSX is Microsoft Excel's modern file format, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard. Unlike the legacy binary XLS format, XLSX files are ZIP archives containing XML documents that describe worksheet data, formulas, styles, and charts. XLSX supports up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet, offers better compression for smaller file sizes, and improved data recovery. It is the default format for Excel 2007 and all subsequent versions, including Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel for Mac, and Excel Online.
XLSX vs JPG — What's the difference?
XLSX is an editable, XML-based spreadsheet format with formulas, pivot tables, and interactive charts. JPG is a static image format with no interactive content. Converting XLSX to JPG creates a visual snapshot of your spreadsheet as it appears on screen, preserving sparklines, data bars, icon sets, and all cell formatting. The resulting image is universally viewable but cannot be filtered, sorted, or recalculated.
When should you convert XLSX to JPG?
Convert XLSX to JPG when you need to share spreadsheet visuals without giving access to the underlying data or formulas. Common scenarios include embedding quarterly reports in slide decks, sharing dashboards on social media, sending formatted tables via messaging apps, creating visual archives of financial statements, or including spreadsheet data in printed materials where an image format is required.
